Despite the "common wisdom", I don't consider (Fatmagülün suçu ne) the height of Engin Akyurek's career. If an actor's progress is measured by such "recognized" factors as fame, popularity and fan base, then yes, this show might be considered the milestone of his career so far. But if it is measured by quality, and quality alone, the obvious answer would be (Bir Bulut Oslam). In fact, many consider (Fatmagülün uçu ne) a step back for EA from (Bir Bulut Oslam). Let's for a moment forget about the huge fan and media fuss about "Kerim's" persona and try to see this from Engin Akyurek's point of view if we can.

First of all, the man himself has admitted enjoying the role of Mustafa Bulut more than that of Kerim. He got rid of the latter character's style immediately after the show has ended as if to reduce the "infamous Kerim effect". His choice of the shaggy look was not a random one. He wants to be taken seriously as an actor, not as a pretty boy or a prince charming_ as lots of us tend to see him after that role. What person would willingly give up such a rewarding image unless they have another agenda in mind; an agenda that involves being a true artist, not a famous one?

You see, For someone as dedicated as our man, these things, that people take for granted as an indispensable part of the whole package an actor should accept and even seek in his career, seem to mean absolutely nothing. He has conformed to none of these "rules" in the acting business, but rather re-defined the whole concept of a successful actor strictly as one with real talent, passion and commitment_ no "additions" needed thank you very much. This has cost him some time to be where he is now, but he eventually got there with no compromises whatsoever. It clearly shows how keen he is on providing good art. His role doesn't have to be the talk of the town or a major hit. It simply needs to appeal to his own standards _not those of others. He simply needs to enjoy playing it, finds his passion in it no matter what. And this is what separates a real artist from a typical actor, a job from a calling; this sense of fulfillment with money, approval and fame being side-products or not being there at all. But who said that following your heart is an easy thing to do? You need to have a lot of guts to stand up to your beliefs in a world that keeps pushing you to do otherwise, much less in an industry that would consume you in no time if you don't comply?

Consider for instance a major cinema classic as "The Godfather". The movie was lauded "one of Hollywood's greatest critical and commercial successes" ever according to Wikipedia, and we all obviously know that. Yet, we might be surprised to know that the movie-adapted novel's author "Mario Puzo" didn't consider it his best _ but rather The Fortunate Pilgrim_ and kept repeating in an interview with Larry King that the only reason he wrote it was for money, and that he "always wish [he]'d written it better"! So the man didn't really fulfill himself as a writer in what is regarded his best-selling masterpiece! What’s even more surprising is the attitude of the director _Francis Ford Coppola_ toward the movie he was most famous for! Coppola has actually "hated" working on the Godfather as he said in “Inside the Actors Studio”. He only did it to establish himself well enough to be able to enjoy freedom and control in his future projects! He also considers his movie " The Conversation" to be more successful than both his Godfathers. (www.asu.edu/courses/fms394/documents/fms394-SamplePaper.doc). So you see, even the greatest of artists had to make compromises in their careers under different justifications. But not our man. And we wouldn't want that for him ever now, would we? We wish him to remain true to himself and not to go with the trend or to have to play a show he's not fully satisfied with because "that' the way things are" or because he can’t be away from the screen at this critical juncture of his career. Why not be away from the screen if there is not a worthy show to be back on it, even if he has to wait for years, not only months?

Engin, my man, just carry on the way you are: no stooping, no pragmatism and no compromises. Everybody kept telling me how I had to compromise in order to make it in this world and I regretfully listened to them and lost a great deal of self-respect in the process. But that's not your style. You have shaken many "givens" so far. You have preached a new trend of your own. Don't stop now. It's what we admire you for. The great Bernard Shaw once said: "The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man".. Please be unreasonable!"
