Why doesn't Turkish media publish this news?

Engin Akyurek has taken the Middle East by storm; he has won over the young and old, and has become an instant phenomenon, replacing many other actors in women's fantasies and hearts. Yet, interestingly, while Arab newspapers and magazines write page after page of glowing compliments and heap praise on th...e immensely talented and popular young actor, Turkish media is silent. While some actors are instantly glorified in print and TV, when the subject is Engin Akyurek, many remain silent. Even on the popular Beyaz Show, during which a young Arab fan mentioned several times how her favorite show was FGSN? and that she knew "Kerim," Beyaz repeatedly asked her about another popular actor. Hmmm??? Isn't it interesting, that while this visitor to his show was discussing HER interests, Beyaz was interested in showcasing HIS interests. We know the other actor is an immensely popular and talented actor as well. We know he is considered incredibly attractive by many around the world. We like this other actor, and he has his own greatly supportive fans. But, we ADORE Engin Akyurek, and so do our friends all around the Middle East, in Europe, and in the "New World." Please, let's give Engin Akyurek his due. Engin Akyurek is not an actor to be callously dismissed; he is an actor that should be carefully cultivated, and treated as a national treasure, for he certainly is one of the most amazingly talented and gifted actors to come along in a great while. Others around the world see his worth; let's do so in Turkey, as well.

FGSN Episode 68. HONOR-COURTESY

Honor!!

What is an honor? Is there an exact definition of it? Or does it mean the same thing for everybody? Does it have a gender? If we are equal and if we are living on this earth together, is it decent to apply different honor criteria for man and woman? Is everybody responsible for each other’s honor or is honor something personal? Should we evaluate the honor on what we do or do someone else’s actions affect our honor? Who does decide who is honorable and in what degree? What are its universal rules?

Mustafa killed a man and is in jail for honor. What a mighty and praiseworthy man! Let’s bow down in front of him. Let Cem Karaca’s infamous song play at the background: “we serve time in prison for honor, brother, this is our prison.” Phew! You see how everybody is respecting him in the jail. All the prisoners have been waiting for him, for this moment; having a man in their cell who killed for his honor and making him their agha (master). Yes, agha! If our subject is Mustafa, then this kind of treatment is very normal. After he scared Yasarans and pulled rank on them for months, you don’t expect him to be a chicken and to start serving tea to other inmates or sweeping the cell while in prison. He also has plentiful money; money in abundance. In prison, nobody says “my agha, my pasha” to a man just because he killed for his honor; maybe they don’t disturb you or they don’t treat to you bad. However, if you have money, it is a different story. Our scenarists force the limits of the logic if it is Mustafa. They drift away from the reality. When it is Mustafa, the inmate serving the tea says “my respects” and walks backward. He can’t even turn his back to Mustafa.

Who did restore whose honor? Who is dishonored and whose honor should be restored? This is the most painful, frustrating and unacceptable thing. If it is Fatmagul who is dishonored and if it is Fatmagul’s honor that needs to be restored, then can you tell me what Fatmagul did to disgrace herself? Is honor something tangible that it is related to our physical being? Isn’t it an abstract concept? In that case, like all abstract concepts, doesn’t it to be related to our brain that manages and directs the abstract concepts. Who did Fatmagul harm? For whom did she think badly? Which moral concepts and rules did she break? On what basis do you think that she disgraced herself? Why is she responsible for others’ malice? Why should we think that she is responsible and why should we judge her? Is she the one who violated moral principles? How honorable is to label Fatmagul with the “dishonoring and honor that needs to be restored” thing while Erdogan, Selim, and Vural don’t have any honor problems? Furthermore, do we have to have a man to restore the honor? Is woman impotent to carry her own responsibility? Let’s say that Fatmagul disgraced herself, does it have to be a man’s responsibility to restore her honor? And does he has to be Mustafa who exchanged his beloved with the money, who betrayed, threatened, slandered, murdered, blackmailed, played tricks in the name of honor? Mustafa the honest(!) and the victim(!) Mustafa dimension is there for the honor concept. Is honor collective or personal concept? Should a person be responsible only for things he or she does for by his/her own will or does honor of people relative to you also affect you? If a child’s parents are doing immoral things, should we label that child as dishonest? Do you think we should attribute husband’s dishonesty to his wife who lives on moral grounds without knowing his husband’s wrong doings? Furthermore, should guarding a woman’s honor be a man’s responsibility? Do you think that women are so weak and so focal point of this ugly honor concept that this subjective, wrong, and immoral honor concept becomes burden on women and men are held responsible? I don’t understand this mentality, which should be long gone now, is displayed as if it is something dignified in this episode. Is it Mustafa’s place to restore Fatmagul’s pure honor? It looks like that way according to our scenarists. It is no secret that when Kerim got arrested in the first season, we said that Kerim will not be treated as Yasarans in the prison because inmates would think that he was there for honor and they would love Kerim. But we never claimed that inmates would bow and pay their respects to him. And that didn’t happen. Attitudes of inmates towards Kerim were very consistent. Of course, we are being silly again. If you notice, the weakest points of this scenario are the scenes related to the relationship of Mustafa and Fatmagul and relationship of Kerim and Mustafa. And these are the scenes that harm Fatmagul character the most. Isn’t it interesting? In fact, it is not interesting at all; because Mustafa is a character that belongs to our scenarists, not to master Vedat Turkali (original author of the story). He is included in this story by our scenarists and, unfortunately, he is also ruined by them. Therefore, he is a freakish, unfit, and beyond redemption. In short, he is not the produce of our master’s imagination.

We can’t even think Mustafa as a character. He is a punishment for all of us as he remorselessly implied to Asu. We can’t even categorize him as human, let alone as a character. How could you talk about the humanity of a person who doesn’t love anybody but himself and allegedly “Fatmagul”? For God’s sake, how can a man who doesn’t love his own son love Fatmagul ? How could they expect us to believe that? Mustafa will get a divorce and finish his sentence, but when is our sentence going to finish? Mustafa is sentenced for 22 years whereas we and Kerim are sentenced for life.

Anyway, we will be free in June but Kerim’s life is more difficult. We all accepted the fact that Mustafa will always be a trouble for him but what about Fatmagul? They say one falls in love with his/her own ordeal. And this kid fell in love with his own ordeal and there is no escape. Nobody can persuade me otherwise: Kerim is naïve, fine, sensitive, courteous, and kind whereas Fatmagul is a selfish character who sometimes lacks these qualities. I tell you why. Let’s leave aside her attitude towards Kerim for a minute. Mirzat has been protecting her for a while. He has been following her everywhere she went. The trial is over, and he is leaving now. Kerim, like a true Anatolian young man, friendly shakes his hand and says “Thanks brother, God bless you”, whereas, Fatmagul comes to the door only when Kerim hollers and says a loose “Good Bye” to Mirzat. Is this how you show your appreciation? What kind of young lady attitude is that? She was selfish again and she continued on this selfish behavior because she was still thinking Mustafa’s words. Fatmagul again ruined everything and she showed us she wasn’t even near the character she was supposed to be.

Do you think these kind of people are more valuable even though they often make us think and harm our feeling of fairness? Think about warm and selfless Asu who is always vilified and maltreated versus cold, dull, and selfish Fatmagul who is regarded all the time. Again think about selfless, loyal, prudent, loving, and in-love Sami versus unloving and selfish Mustafa. Who do you think should be preferred and regarded?

Sami is not highly regarded character based on the criteria set for people and values. He is one of those losers. Because he is a good person, he protects his beloved without hurting anybody but he doesn’t see her beloved as a good and he doesn’t say “you belong to me.” He doesn’t close his eyes to the realities and he doesn’t believe masks. He analyzes Mustafa very well and doesn’t believe his crocodile tears. He sees the fact that Mustafa only apologized to Fatmagul and tells this, but nobody minds him.

Doesn’t Sami look familiar? He and Kerim share many similar attributes. Nobody minds Kerim as well. Who cares about his feelings, dreams, expectations, pains, and worries? What is it to Fatmagul or Meryem? Isn’t it intimidating to see Meryem’s attitude towards Kerim at this ridiculous parking scene? She just brushed over Kerim’s humorous expectation of little bit of acknowledgement. This was repulsive, ugly, and harmful.

However, we got used to Meryem and her repulsive scenes. Kadir Bey lost our sympathy after he married to Meryem. Who did like the long scenes about Kadir Bey’s illness? We are already disturbed seeing them in bed every episode and we watched the chain of boring scenes when they mixed the real life and the scenario. I don’t know about you but I felt like I was watching Civan Civanova’s (actor) life story instead of Kadir Bey’s. It even disturbs me more to see mixing actor’s or actress’ lives into the scenario than seeing mistakes in the scenario. I believe this is disrespectful to the viewers. This is not the first and it is not going to be the last. As you know, we lived in a fear for whole week because of the “Cotton” song (belongs to Kenan Dogulu). It is not a beautiful song at all, but this is not the real issue. We were opposed to disrespectful behavior against the viewers because they were using this show for the real personas of the actors/actresses and this was decreasing the believability of this show. It was also absurd to see Fatmagul’s voice changing one scene to another. She was losing her voice in one scene and she was talking very clear in another scene. They could do some explanation humorously to clear this situation. Kerim and Ebe Nine acted as if nothing is wrong when Fatmagul was sounding like a rooster. Let’s assume that Ebe Nine don’t care anybody else but his husband after the marriage, but, what is wrong with Kerim? Kerim could do some jokes when they carry Lodos and make those scenes more natural and sympathetic. It looks like they are having difficulty in improvisation. We don’t understand this team and, therefore, we question their work.

We didn’t forget the scenes done just for the commercials. Now, they replaced these scenes with the ones with social messages or answers to the viewers. These scenes are so artificial that it creates negative reaction. Even actresses and actors don’t like acting on these scenes. For example, Bulent Seyran (Rahmi) acts wonderfully even though he has short scenes. On the scene where Mukaddes wanted him to warm the milk in baby’s bottle, he was marvelous when he raised his eyebrow for a moment, thought and reconsidered requested action. Bulent Seyran’s performance on Darussafaka scene was his worst performance ever even though he is one fine actor who is very consistent and successful in his performances. It wasn’t persuasive, and he even did not believe in that scene. It was very artificial. And what is the purpose of Fatmagul’s not-listening, not-caring, and know-it-all attitude while checking the envelopes? That scene which she saw Ozge’s mail in the mail box was written to hush the viewer’s reaction to Ozge’s sudden disappearance from the show. We still remember ‘Nil’ with the Nil Yorgen scenes given to Seda Guven. The Nil Yorgen’s blog scene was written to say that they don’t bring all doctors or public officials under suspicion. Ok, let’s forget about these artificial scenes, but what about the scenes that you use two great people Muazzez Ilmiye Cig and Fahrettin Karaca for your own defense? We will never forgive these scenes. Please let nobody take the blame by saying that he or she conveyed it wrong. We are not to blame. We are intentionally deceived by scenarists and the director. Let’s ignore their defense saying that their look-a-like would act instead of real personas. You intentionally used these two people. The old lady doesn’t have to have a gray hair and the old man doesn’t have to wear the red sweater. Any old couple could give the same message but you choose to exploit these two valuable people for your cheap ratings. You didn’t respect these two people who became our national treasure, let alone the viewers. Shame on you! And then you expect us to respect you. Ok…

Do you think this old couple was different than the other customers who ask and talk about Fatmagul and her lawsuit by coming to Gul Kitchen and whom they blamed for not respecting Fatmagul’s privacy? If this old couple’s interest and support were so important, why did you decry other people? Isn’t it double standard and contradictory to what’s been said before? Isn’t it disrespectful to others?

They don’t respect anybody, but they are full of social messages. We already mentioned some of them before. But let’s review them again: Darussafaka, Ozge, Lodos, Nil and public officials, exploiting our two national treasures, love messages, and furthermore, journalists dying in prison. Please, you do complete the ones that I missed.

There were absurd things in this episode. For example, when did Hilmiye and Perihan solve the problems between them and then started swinging between laughing and crying by frighteningly opening their mouths? And then, they immediately got better. If you understood this, please explain it to me, because I didn’t get it.

I also didn’t get this girl, Ayche. What a courage she has, how stolid she is. We understand you grew up among criminals and you are used to it but what kind of girl lays next to two rapists under a canvas in a ship’s hold. What kind of courage and recklessness is this? The scenes are funny and cute. The actors are good, the girl is beautiful, but these men are rapist. That funny imagination scene was the worst. I got goose bumps when I watched the scene that Selim and Erdogan imagined Ayche and they told her that she was beautiful and had beautiful legs. She was almost harassed and, if we think about the real life, worse things could happen. Thank God, it didn’t happen. So, what was Ayche’s reaction? She was embarrassed and therefore, she ended the talk. Were you satisfied or disturbed by this scene? It looks like this is very natural for our scenarists but it wasn’t natural to me at all and I was very disturbed by this scene.

Do you know what else disturbs me? Our heroes do not have the habit of knocking on the doors in the house where they live in commune. Kerim, our beloved, you don’t enter someone else’s room just like that even if she is your wife. But, the scene right after that was beautiful. We understood that Fatmagul’s tears were for Asu and her baby, not for Mustafa. Although we were jealous of her compassion for others which she didn’t have for Kerim, we were relieved when we saw that scene. Kerim, please don’t enter into a room without knocking the door from now on. Although you came a long way, don’t listen the scenarists or the director while entering your wife’s room.

It is true that Kerim and Fatmagul came a long way. The flirtation outside was like a flirt between new lovers with the help of Mukaddes. It was also fun to watch the scene where they became family with Lodos. However, if you ask me, the most beautiful and impressive scene was the scene that they prepared the dinner in the kitchen. I have to praise the scenarists and say that I like the scenes depicting man and woman sharing the work at home or democracy in the house. I wish these scenes were longer. Anyway, what happened at that dinner scene? We saw the first signs of Mukaddes’ jealousy. When they were talking about the old couple and when Fatmagul said “their love to each other never decreased”, Kerim wishfully said “We will be like them, hopefully” and Mukaddes said “We’ll see…” And Kerim reacted and said “We’ll see” and shut her up. Another nice sign was this: when Kerim said “I am taking these”, Fatmagul’ naturally and comfortably said “take it, sweetheart”. This was a big progress.

“Take it, sweetheart”. See Fatmagul, he is “your sweetheart” whom you ruined for two seasons by saying “don’t hurt me, you are hurting me, you want to hurt me”. See, you have been hurting yourself. Please don’t do this to us, to yourself, and to your sweetheart who is also our sweetheart. Please don’t make him have fears or feel insecure as you did at the trial or during Mukaddes’ interrogation after the trial. Erase Mustafa and those dirty memories and clean your life and your love.
