Fatma series is now the most popular in the Arab countries, after breaking records in Turkey, and being discussed in the Turkish parliament and being considered as the most daring because of the rape subject it is treating.

But what happened behind the scenes ?

The work started directly after the end of "ask-i memnu". and Kivanç Tatlitug insisted on going with the team to watch the first episode.
Beren Saat was very nervous and tensed before filming the rape scene, and the people around her tried to calm her down. All the actors went through sessions with therapists and the rape scene shooting started at 10:00 pm and ended at dawn.
The series was very criticized which made the production company issue a statement defending the actors.
The most watched episode was the 19th, and since then, it was always ranked number 1.
The series also faced several law suits. Even Beren Saat was harassed while being in a cafe, which led the turkish women organizations to support her, because of her role in the series.

Here is the translation of Meryem Aksoy interpretation of the last episode. I thought it was interesting and I wanted to share this with English speaking fans; there may be some mistakes or typos but it will give you the idea. Enjoy:

FGSN 66. BÖLÜM- KERİM’İN AŞKI…
FGSN EPISODE 66 – KERIM’S LOVE…
When thou shalt be disposed to set me light,
And place my merit in the eye of scorn,
Upon thy side against myself I'll fight,
And prove thee virtuous, though thou art forsworn.
With mine own weakness being best acquainted,
Upon thy part I can set down a story
Of faults conceal'd, wherein I am attainted,
That thou in losing me shalt win much glory:
And I by this will be a gainer too;
For bending all my loving thoughts on thee,
The injuries that to myself I do,
Doing thee vantage, double-vantage me.
Such is my love, to thee I so belong,

“To abandon oneself for a beloved” is how the lover in this poem perceives the love. This is such a deep love that you condemn yourself to unhappiness for the happiness of your beloved. Your beloved is always right and you take all the blame to make her right. You apologize even though she is wrong. Isn’t the lover in this poem familiar? Yes, this is our lover, Kerim. This is how Kerim loves. The only important thing for Kerim is solely Fatmagul’s good and happiness.
Yunus Emre says:
“Don’t say I’m in myself. I am not at all.
There’s an I within me, deep, deeper, than I”
(Translation: Prof. Talât Sait Halman)

There is no Yunus anymore. There is only his love within him and his beloved. Kerim’s love turns into a mystical love just like Yunus’. Like Yunus, there is no Kerim anymore; there is only his love within him and Fatmagul. Therefore, Kerim doesn’t apologize only for himself but he also apologizes for “love” on behalf of his beloved. Therefore, we cannot feel that Kerim’s love has been requited or will be requited. Probably, we will never feel this way. Because, Fatmagul’s love is mundane in every situation; it can never be on the same level as Kerim’s. That’s why Fatmagul always says “me first”, Kerim is not deeper than herself, she hasn’t given up herself for Kerim. She hasn’t given up “anything” for Kerim yet. And it doesn’t look like she will be able to do so.
But still, Kerim wants to know and feel that he is being loved, even though he says “I am not in myself”. He wants to hear simple answers from the beloved within himself. Just like the answer he wanted to hear to his question that he asked when they are talking in private at home. What was that talk? Fatmagul retreats into silence after the kidnapping incident. Kerim comes and looks at Fatmagul; he tries to read her face or interpret her actions to get an answer but he cannot find the answer he is looking for. At last, he puts his questions into words. Even though he is heartbroken because of Fatmagul’s distinction of “Mustafa” and “dirtbags”, he continues to ask and tries to get hopeful and positive messages from Fatmagul. She doesn’t want to talk, which is not hard to understand since what she lived through has not been easy. Sometimes, you want to be quiet: “Please nobody ask, nobody question, let it be gone, and l don’t want to hear my voice. If I hear my voice, I hear my screams and pain.” You say “let it go.” You don’t want to hear the truth. But... There is a big “but”. Kerim has also lived those pains, horrors with her. Marriage and love and to love are to get over all these difficulties together, to share these pains, tribulations, and defiance, and to hear other one’s voice. Kerim tries to hear Fatmagul’s voice to share. But, Fatmagul ignores his voice. That’s what shatters our faith to this marriage and love. Kerim doesn’t give up and says “Tell me”, but Fatmagul doesn’t speak, only says, “I don’t want to talk”. And then Kerim asks the painful question: “Even with me?” There is “a lot” in that question. There is begging of “Please say, you are different, you are me, how can’t I talk to you.” But, Fatmagul doesn’t say all these. She can’t; because Kerim is not within her and he still couldn’t be deeper than her. “Even with you!” This is the most heartbreaking and the most feared answer. Because, there is “Who the hell are you? Do you think you are different from them?” in this answer. There is the rejection of love and marriage. Normally, this should be devastating for Kerim. Nevertheless, although he is stunned, he endures and he apologizes: “I am sorry”; because there is no Kerim but only the love within Kerim and “the beloved.” In fact, Kerim apologizes to the love within himself that can really be hurt and to “the beloved.”
Actually, this is not what our scenarists are trying to tell. But, if the subject is Kerim then the result is always beyond what they want to do or what they want to mean; because Kerim already turned into somebody alive, somebody independent from them. His screen time is cut down and his dialogs are lessened and lost their substance. They try to make him miserable and to wear him down and they scorn him. But these are all in vain; they can’t handle this monster that is already out of their control. There is no Kerim, but love; a big love that Engin Akyurek vitalized and “the beloved” within Kerim that transforms him beyond what he is. Therefore, never mind that this episode is heavily weighted on Mustafa, that they elaborate on Mustafa, that they make Fatmagul Mustafa’s beloved and his bride even if it was in his dreams, that they make Kerim grovel and let Mustafa get a revenge on Kerim in these dreams. These are all meaningless exertions; because Kerim and “the beloved” within him are what is real for the viewer. This “beloved” can be Fatmagul or somebody else. But, if they claim that this show is Vedat Turkali’s novel “What is Fatmagul’s fault?” and if their purpose is to tell Fatmagul’s story and to make people embrace her then they should give up this stubbornness and mistake without it is too late. Nobody understands or loves Mustafa’s beloved or bride. Fatmagul should be made Kerim’s beloved. And Fatmagul should become alive as much as Kerim and she should be a vibrant person in love, she should be out of this pathetic condition. Otherwise, it is going to be too late for Fatmagul. I wonder whether they really made a research on what disturbs the viewer the most and then wrote Mustafa and his dreams. These dreams are another form of disturbing curses, which we hear increasingly in the recent episodes, directed to the viewers. While Kerim is deprived of the love words and beautiful looks, they generously gave all of these to Mustafa, who has become the symbol of the evil and has earned the viewers hate: Kerim’s dream of seeing Fatmagul in bridal gown is given to Mustafa, even worse, the bridal gown which was Fatmagul’s biggest dream and excitement and the symbol of getting her life back, was ruthlessly soiled. As always they did to all things we value, dream or hope. What for? For Mustafa who we still couldn’t figure out why.
Well, why did you profile him that bad if this character was very important and valuable for you? He could have made mistakes but what is the logic of devilish Mustafa? Did you think that the more the viewers hate this character the more the ratings will be? Well, I have bad news for you. The viewers stopped watching this show because of Mustafa and they are abandoning this show for other shows because they are disturbed by Mustafa character and the possibility of Fatmagul’s weakness against Mustafa. The real bad news is that the remaining viewers are put up with all these agony to be able to see Kerim’s love within 3-5 minutes spared to him. Otherwise, what do we care about Mustafa Nalcali, who already cashed his moot “love”, that you’ve been trying to make us believe, by selling it o Yasarans and who started playing in the world stock markets. Who does believe such love now?
Please don’t turn Fatmagul’s love to a love beyond belief like Mustafa’s. When you silence Fatmagul, when you stole Fatmagul’s spirit, when you turn her into someone cold, dull, and insensitive, you are not only ruining Fatmagul, but also other Fatmaguls and the actress that vitalizes Fatmagul. You may say that this dullness because of the trauma, which can be a really preferred situation over bad performance of the actress. But, we hope it is not like that. Bulutsuzluk Ozlemi says “It was a hope that made people live” in their unforgettable song. See, we already forgot that “we had hope.”
There was surprisingly a new “Mukaddes Hanim” whom we wanted to get rid of just a couple episodes ago and who is more sympathetic than Fatmagul in this episode. Such care! Such understanding! Such compassion! You may get angry with me now but her effort to take Fatmagul out of her shell must be appreciated. When they were browsing through bridal gowns, her intentions were good and she was sincere when she said “I pity him (Kerim), he has been eagerly waiting for this”. However, when she called Meryem Hanim for a help after Fatmagul started crying, Meryem Hanim’s voice was like horror movie effect. Bad sister-in-law Mukaddes, exceptional big sister Meryem, and how they show their compassion were really awkward and contradictory in this episode.
There are lots of bizarre things and strange women in this show: for example, Yasarans’ neighbor; she is very unpleasant woman and we still don’t know who she is. But it is impossible for her to grab the unpleasantness crown from Hilmiye Yasaran. She is unarguably the most repulsive woman in this show. She is as vile as Mustafa. She is getting worse day by day. It is hard to believe that she is the mother of Erdogan who should be the bad person of the show. Erdogan is charming and is not like his mother. What about Selim? Is he like her mother? Selim has been learning to be sympathetic from Erdogan. What a shame! The real bad people and rapists are unfortunately very cute. This is hard to understand. It is also very hard to understand Perihan Yasaran. Ok, you turned around from your mistake even though it was too late, but why are you silent to Hilmiye’s and Resat’s rudeness? We learned that you are the source of Yasarans’ fortune (the remaining fortune after Mustafa, of course). Why are you acting so insecure and sheepish? I also want to know Fahrettin Ilgaz’s occupation. He is very rich but the real problem is he understands how to be a detective and he is smart. He immediately connected dots when he saw those kids at the cemetery (police couldn’t do it by the way). Also he carries a licensed gun. He has everything. But this is not important. When there is Fahrettin Ilgaz, there is also Kerim. And we enjoyed watching them both.
We also enjoyed watching Selim and Erdogan. It is really fun to watch these two bad men; because they are handled very well. If there is a couple of undebatable good actors/actresses, Kaan Tasaner is one of them. But, as I told you before, we should mention and appreciate Engin Ozturk’s effort and progress; because acting of some other actresses and actors in this show is really disappointing We should mention a couple of points while talking about Selim and Erdogan. As you know, their funny escape still continues. When there is Erdogan, there is also fraud. They try to deceive the police by using the phone signals but it doesn’t work. Everything is normal until this point. I don’t understand how you can let a truck driver, who drives the truck that the phone located and who will be probably out of country soon, go without questioning,. There are lots of thing like this. For example, they didn’t accept the cassette as evidence. Isn’t this court’s decision? As Munir said “when they found us guilty, we will be arrested”. It is court’s decision whether you are guilty or not. We would have understood if Meryem, Fatmagul, Kerim, Perihan, Hilmiye, Mukaddes, or Resat were telling these things. But when these come from Munir, Kadir, or Omer, it is surprising and it is hard to understand. Let our dear lawyers continue to blether in the courthouse hallway, there was one smart character walking at the courthouse and that was Meltem. Yes Meltem. Asu has the most dramatic story of this show. She was disappointing time to time but we understood her because we knew her struggles and dilemmas. And there is a new threat for Asu ; his name is Demir and he will be probably thrown into the unnecessary-characters-trash pretty soon. Meltem understood that Asu was afraid of somebody and she just got outside of the courthouse and she found out who she was afraid of and she boldly took Demir with her without caring whether he is a thief, a murderer, or pervert. She is the biggest surprise of this episode. Although she has the habit and experience in collaborating with bad people, this is the highest point. We didn’t see, but we’ll see that Meltem took Demir with her. This Demir topic is not a simple topic. We’ll see how it is going to be processed and ruined.
Although, it looks simple and it looks like it will turn into a funny love or flirt story, the other topic that shouldn’t be so simple is the beautiful girl with blue eyes who appears at Erdogan and Selim’s door at the lighthouse; the beautiful girl that causes Selim to smile devilishly. We understand who she is when she said “my passengers”. She does human trafficking; she gains on humans’ dreams and hopes, she takes every last penny, and at the first sight of danger, she leaves man, woman, and children to their death in the middle of the sea without hesitation. You’ll see that we will find her cute and sympathetic and we will love her. You ain’t seen nothing yet. Because they have to fill the episodes somehow and good things have to live short despite the viewer. Kerim and Fatmagul shouldn’t come closer and shouldn’t be happy. Happiness is contagious and these show goddesses don’t like happiness because drama is their nutrition.

piata media romaneasca arata altfel. daca aici stirile si sportul sunt mereu pe primul loc iar serialele vin undeva pe locul 6 -7 , dar nimic nu depaseste fotbalul, in turcia serialele ocupa primele pozitii. cred ca au mai mult telespectatoare decat telespectatori. de aceea ei se adreseaza femeilor. ciudate femei au daca stau si vad rauti de lacrimi si suferinta , o fi pe principiul sa moara si capre vecinului, cu cat sufera in serial vreuna mai mult ca ele e super.

Serialul o fi el despre un subiect "fierbinte" si care ataca unele subiecte "neatinse" pana acum pe la ei ... dar ne mai uitam si la punerea scenariului in scena . Este de toata jena ... nici nu-i de mirare ca cei vorbitori de engleza s-au indepartat . Dar daca vturcilor le place ... foarte bine . Ce avem noi a face cu gusturile lor .

Dar totul este pentru binele ei .

Oricum ... de asta au si facut ca rochia de mireasa sa fie rupta . Nu mai fac nicio nunta ... si nici ca mai imi pasa .

Si asta este ultimul serial turcesc la care ma mai uit .
