Murat Yildirim speaks with Ayse Arman of Elele Magazine English Translation
~Your story starts in Mardin correct?
MY~Yes, when my mother was 16 she married my father in an arranged marriage. My father was a teacher. Actually he is a teacher of literature, but due to some complications on a bureaucratic level he was teaching elementary school. Then he was transferred from Mardin to Konya. After they relocated to Konya the entire family followed and they lived there for 25 years. Sometime during that time frame I was born.
~Do you have any siblings?
MY~I have 2 sisters, the younger is studying at Koc University. The elder is a teacher.
~What does it feel like being the middle child?
MY~My elder sister is actually more like my second mother. When I was studying in Istanbul away from my mother she was always by my side. She is only three years older than me, but really a very mature person. We are more like mother and son instead of brother sister or friends.
~You were raised in Konya. What are your memories of that city?
MY~Whats left. We were five friends. During middle school we were always together, never parted; as we matured, learned about life, it was always the five of use. I still keep in touch with them.
~Are they all males?
MY~Yes all males
~You are now a star, but you still keep in touch with them really?
MY~Out of the five I had lost contact with only one of them. But when he saw the new series “Suskunlar” he contact me and said “He was a guard in a prison”. Considering the fact that the storyline of “Suskunlar” is that of five friends with a story of a prison life as well, it was quite interesting. During the shootings I sometimes think back to my times in Konya with my friends. They have all contacted me.
~Whose characteristics do you seem to resemble the most?
MY~My mother. I love to be argumentative. What’s wrong with that, you need to value a good argument. You need to realize what you are arguing about. My mother has this characteristic. But even after a good argument she always knew how to win back her opponent. She never stayed angry with anyone, she never wanted to do that.
~How was is that the family moved from Konya to Adana?
MY~Transfer of my fathers job. My mother and father still reside in Adana. I went to high school in Adana. I lived twelve years in Konya and five years in Adana.
~Which school did you attend in Adana?
MY~Baraj High School. It was one of those high schools where the teachers actually fretted the students. There was never a day without some sort of a fight with a knife. My mother would say a prayer every morning before I left, and would always tell me to be home before dark. However, I also hung out with many of the psychopaths and heavy hitters at the school, I loved to fight.
~You actually have a dark side then?
MY~But this was for fun….While with friends for example at a bar you first fight, then you have a good time with those you just fought with laughing and you all leave together, this is an enjoyment in itself. But of course that is in the past. But this is a fact of my life….I want to live my life freely. I do not want any obstacles. I hate obstacles that prevents a person from expanding and growing.
~What have you learned from your father?
MY~be a good person, if the person standing besides you does not realize this about you, you will appreciate this one day.
~What type of student were you?
MY~I was very lazy. I was however good in mathematics. This was the reason I was steered towards engineering. So eventually I got my degree in engineering, however it did take me eight years due to my being lazy.
~Why were you lazy?
MY~This was due to the fact that I would sleep until five in the afternoon, I did not want to get out of bed. Sometimes I would enjoy just laying there staring at the bare ceiling. For me to accomplish something sometimes it takes another persons insistence and force.
~Well this was a period in your life where you did not know what you wanted to do. This includes acting as well not being in the thought process correct?
MY~Yes, but not included was engineering as well. However, I do believe that if I had completely my education in a timely matter I would not be doing this job right now.
~So you believe in going with the flow?
MY~I believe in enjoying the moment, feeling the moment, living the moment. At that point in a persons life you are just discovering life. At the age of 17 you are not thinking about your financial *fluturaş*. The only thing that you are concerned about is living your life.
~Do you always believe in acting the way you feel?
MY~If you are sincere, and living in the real world, the path you choose will always have different options.
~During that time period did you not have any dreams or aspirations?
MY~None. For a period I got involved with music, I loved it, and I am still involved, but not on the professional level in comparison. When I started acting music took a back seat. Other than that there was nothing else that I was attached to in life.
~Who was you hero during that time period?
MY~While involved with music it was the drummer Lars Ulrich of Metallica I wanted to be like him. While playing the drums I would imagine that I was him. I had just arrived in Istanbul and I was 18 years old.
~You came to Istanbul to attend Yildiz Technical University and study mechanical engineering. What are your thoughts about this now, was it a good decision or bad decision?
MY~It was a super decision, when I came here there were tons of rock bars. I was at those bars everyday. When I started I was 18 years old when I graduated I was 27 years old. Today I despise those types of locations, even when walking pass one of them is tend to say “Wow this place is too noisy” yet back then I would have said “This is perfect, its the right place, and its time to do something crazy”.
~How did you get your start in theater? Who was the originator of this?
MY~I started performing in the Universities theater. One day while sitting on the terrace at school and pretty girl came over and asked “We are putting on a play this afternoon would you like to watch it”, I asked her if she was performing in the play and she said yes so I went. I enjoyed the play and laughed very hard . A year later I also joined the theater club, I enjoyed being the thought of being on stage, and started performing. Of course at that time it never even occurred to me that I would be acting in serials later on in life and earning money for doing this.
~What is it about theater that attracts you, what do you feel about theatrics?
MY~I am assuming it is being able to do something, being able to explain something, explaining something difficult in a smarter form…..I found out who I was on the stage. Instead of saying I am like this or like that, I am able to perform to show who I am. When watching someone perform on stage, you can relate better to the book they are reading, or the music they are listening too, this is obvious through their performance. I guess that this is the best way I can express myself.
~OK so afterwards the leap into professionalism was it by luck or by chance?
MY~I friend of mine who is a writer had watched me perform in a comedy and referred me to BKM. I performed in the serial “Olumsuz Ask” which was written by Yilmaz Erdogan. The rest followed.
~I am quite sure that while working you are enjoying yourself even though your work habits are extremely disciplined. What happens to life during this time?
MY~This is a fact in the serial world. You are working 6-7 days a week. If you go back and read what some of my answers are regarding my life, and now look at my life!
~As someone who has performed in theater, when receiving an offer to perform in a serial were you at all hesitant? This is television serials, which could be destroying theater?
MY~Of course I thought about it. To add to this we discuss this with friends, what are you doing in television, why are you in a serial…but then you think that you should be able to perform in all venues, without compromising yourself.
~A comment we hear from all the women is “The “look” is beautiful. How do you do this while performing, is this something you learned to do while performing or does this happen naturally?
MY~You are performing a certain scenario, and that is a part of life. Haven’t you ever fallen in love? You keep somewhere in the corner of your mind how you would look at the person you loved. So you actually do not have to do anything something other than think of that person and picture them in your mind while performing, and without realizing that look will appear.
~The turning point in your life was?
MY~I would have to say in the time period when I was bar hopping and meeting and befriending the friend that recommended and introduced me to BKM.
~Do you feel lucky that you became an actor instead of an engineer?
MY~I lived my life to the fullest, and the people that I met along the way helped choose this path. While I am here now, I could have been somewhere else. This would not make that much of a difference. Was this luck, yes for me it was luck.
~How did you get married?
MY~It was during the taping of “Fırtına”…Burcin and I were living together…during an argument she asked me “What do you want from me” and without even giving it a second thought I responded “I want to marry you”
~What was her response when you said that?
MY~The arguing stopped, and we were in a different mode at that point. I do not believe that marriage is romance, nor does marriage have to be surrounded by romance. While yes you are sharing a life, but that does not mean that you have to become me, or I have to become you. Each person is their own individual and both enjoy each others company and have fun.
~Did anyone say to you….”Man are you crazy don’t do it”?
MY~Plenty!! They still say that. I was not getting married with pomp and circumstance, I was getting married to the person I wanted to marry, that is how I viewed it. While living with that person are you happy? That is the right question. But saying not getting married to me that is the stupidest question.
~Are you in love?
MY~Yes I am in love
~How do you complete love? What does it mean to you?
MY~Before I met Burcin setting goals, or working towards growth potential as an adult were things that I hated to have in my life. A typical rebellious youngsters situation. Marriage was also one of these. I viewed marriage as a obstacle in preventing me from acting or being the way I wanted to be. But this is a balance, and I learned that for those that you love you learn to eliminate the negativity that you hated so much.
~In addition you grow together is this not true?
MY~Yes, to find a happy medium, because you are no longer just you. You learn to compromise and continue.
~In your real life are you the real man in love as you portray in your series?
MY~I married the last love of my life, five years ago, and have not loved anyone else since.
~When getting married, did you think “I am a young man, this now means that I will not be sleeping with any other woman?
MY~That is something that goes through every mans mind, if they tell you otherwise they are lying.
~When together, what do you both enjoy the most?
MY~Being on vacation in a foreign country
~Like where?
MY~The Far East, Europe….it does not matter where. I am not a person who vacations much. However being far ways, in a foreign country is what I enjoy most.
~What characteristic does she have that you lack?
MY~Patience..I want to get things done quickly.
~Children? I seem to think that you want children….
MY~In time everything happens. I of course do think of children, but I see with friends, they are saying we are trying and nothing is happening, and they are worried what are we going to do. If we make love on this day at this time conception will happen things like that. I have no worries like that, when it happens it happens!
~While watching your perform, does she make comments regarding your performance?
MY~For the first time with “Suskunlar” she said some very beautiful things. We watched the first episode together, and she complimented me tremendously, and I enjoyed that.
~Were your previous relationships long or short?
MY~ For example, prior to Burcin I did not have a girlfriend for 4 years. Prior to that there were short, and 1-2 longer relationships….I stayed away from anything that was addictive and this includes drugs, cigarettes, and alcohol.
~If I were able to pull acting out of your life what would happen to you?
MY~I would probably becomes more narcistic You would be taking away my humility. On one side of the scale you have a person who loves himself hoggishly, and yet on the other side you have a humble and shy person. As people get to know you they speak with you more, they compliment you directly, and without realizing it you become more humbled. However, humility is good only to a certain extent. There needs to be a balance. In front of you and eventually at the end of the day you have a personal life to live as well.
~Have you ever thought I wish I was born in another country? Kind of like over stepping the boundaries..
MY~No I do not, however the series are being watched in many different countries, and we are getting well know….I grew up with the culture in this country, and I am trying to do something here, and want to expand my horizons here. If in the *fluturaş* the road leads me somewhere else so be it!
~You do not seem to be the type of person who accepts everything without questions?
MY~I am argumentative yes, but this is for comprehensive purposes….I was like this in school as well, for example if I wanted to ask a question regarding mathematics I would do it because I believed and enjoyed seeing how the results were concluded. This still applies now. But after all we are only producing a serial so I do not over exert myself for the conclusion.
~You are sometimes compared to Kivanc Tatlitug and Nejat Isler. What do you when you hear of these comparisons?
MY~I think we are all doing a good job, after all this is not a competition!
~You have always said that you wanted to be a good performer, but why do you say that you “do not want to be a star”…in addition didn’t you want to be a rock star when you were younger?
MY~It could be that I said that because I still have not accomplished everything that I wanted to. If your accomplishments are not satisfactory to yourself, or what you are doing has not satisfied your full potential, stardom at that point would do more harm than good. Receiving too many compliments can sometimes lead a person to think that they may be doing something wrong. For this reason you may not want to be a start. However I want to be a rock star…that’s different!
~Does the fact that women find you handsome and sexy bother you?
MY~No of course not. It is a nice compliment when someone from the opposite sex finds you appealing, but for me I am right now paying more attention to my performing. It is for that reason that receiving compliments about being sexy or handsome do not excite me. Also if you are a good performer and doing your job right your will be viewed as extremely handsome.
~Sometimes good looks can over power a good performance. As an actor do you find it to be a handicap to be handsome?
MY~This is something that you cannot control. You could have a totally normal physic, yet when you are seen on the screen you could appear very attractive to the viewers.
~Does your wife get jealous?
MY~If she does she does not make it obvious
~and You?
MY~I am a jealous person. Not with the work she does, but amongst other people. I have this trait just like everyone else.
~What type of life do you have?
MY~Lately, I have been arriving home very early in the mornings from the shootings, I do not even take my house keys with me, I don’t know, I like the fact that she opens the door for me. Without wasting too much time I go to bed, once up I take a shower, then we have breakfast together, then its back to the set. We only have one day off to spend with each other.
~Do you think that you are performing well in “Suskunlar” are you happy with your performance?
MY~They are times that I criticize myself of course, but I try and be reasonable at that.. The result is that the scenario comes to you and one maybe two days later you are on the set.
~Tell us something about yourself that we do not know..
MY~Most people basically do not really know me. I actually like this. These interviews do not cover one one thousandths about me. Just like everyone else, there are things that are kept separate from my public life, and everything in that place is really beautiful.
THIS IS AN ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF THE INTERVIEW THAT APPEARS IN THE JUNE 2012 ELELE MAGAZINE THE REPORTER FOR THE INTERVIEW WAS AYSE ARMAN
