She told everything about her new series

This role requires rhythm
Nowadays Tuba Büyüküstün has a hectic life. On the one hand the shots of the series “Gönülçelen“ (Heart Stealer) of Büyüküstün is going on, which will begin running on atv and on the other hand, she is waiting that her movie “Yüreğine Sor” (Ask Your Heart) will start in cinema. But she is still modest, as usual .

I DON’T SEE ME LIKE A STAR
On an evening Teşvikiye Street in Nişantaşı. Of course the traffic is congested. There is a gypsy girl who uses this congestion as an advantage by selling flowers. The drivers don’t look at her. Some ward our gypsy girl off by hand movements, some with head movements. Some are watching her curiously, looking at her astonishingly and couldn’t believe that it is Tuba Büyüküstün. No rush to the scene! This is the shooting of the series Gönülçelen, which will be published this month on atv.

Gönülçelen is a familiar story. It mainly describes the love of a rich boy to a poor girl. The story is about a girl, who is selling flowers on the streets and a boy, who bet with his friend that he can make her a lady and falling in love with her in that time. Of course it is really normal that this story bring to one’s mind immediately the film of Audrey Hepburn “My Fair Lady”, so because “Gönülçelen” is the adaption of the film to our days. Let’s remember, this is not the first adaptation of this in this: the movie of Türkân Şoray called “Tatlı Meleğim” and movie called “Sürtük” of Hülya Koçyiğit were also adaptations of “My Fair Lady”. After them, it is up to Tuba Büyüküstün to get a “Lady”.

PRODUCER IS TOMRİS GİRİTLİOĞLU
The producer is Tomris Giritlioğlu, the director is Ahmet Katıksız and the screenwriters are Gül Dirican and Sertaç Ergin. Tuba Büyüküstün is playing a gypsy girl in the series where also Cansel Elçin, Onur Saylak, İlhan Şeşen, Ünal Silver, Günay Karacaoğlu and Ayda Aksel are acting. Of course there is not only “Gönülçelen” at Tubas side. She played Esma in the movie “Yüreğine Sor” directed by Yusuf Kurçenli, which was shot in Black Sea region and will be shown on March 12th. There she takes part in a love story which becomes a legend. Fans are already active in internet sites. The fans are not only from Turkey. They are from the whole Middle East. The fans of Gönülçelen just opened fan sites and are passionately waiting for “Yüreğine Sor”. We took this opportunity and talked with Tuba Büyüküstün.

- Love has found you again… In the series “Gönülçelen” and movie “Yüreğine Sor” there is love. How is the sequence of love in these projects?
- Now in each series and film there is a love story inside. But when it comes to the movie and series there is a difference between the period and time. “Yüreğine Sor” is a historical film. Therefore, the love is in a time where the development of technology wasn’t advanced and where the world wasn’t globalised… Esma is a girl from Black Sea region. There she falls in love with a man and wants to marry him. She hasn’t another purpose. While she is imagining this, she learns that the man she is in love with is a Christian. Though it doesn’t change anything for Esma, it goes to a tragic end and this love becomes a legend. In “Gönülçelen” the girl is a gypsy. She turns to a “Lady”. In this process it isn’t important for her what she lives and because of a happening she found out that she has felt in love.

- How is your relation to your fans? How do you keep your relationship to them in balance?
- Obviously, you are asking me something I never think about. I’m acting absolutely instinctive and so everything follows naturally. I don’t have a strategy, I don’t think about how I shall behave or how I shall be. I have a pleasant dialogue with my fans. It’s a thing about how to communicate right. If you create a good dialogue then there is no problem. When I’m walking on the street some are greeting and some wants to talk with you. For example, when the set started some fans came and wanted to say good look and brought chocolate. They sat in a café to not disturbing us. Till evening we found time to talk to them we had an enjoyable conversation.

- So what is outside of Turkey?
- Actually, there is no difference for me. But especially in the Middle East they have a different perception. They are really close to us because we have the same religion. There is a situation like this. The more you are going to the East, the closer they want to be to you physically. They want to show their interests by contacting physically. The more you are coming to the West, the more reserved the people are.

- Could you rest a little bit after the series “Asi”?
- Actually, if I say that I rest it wouldn’t be right. We shot with Yusuf Kurçenli the movie “Yüreğine Sor” in the Black Sea region. Afterwards of course the preliminary of “Gönülçelen” started.

I took dance lessons for the series

- How was the shooting process?
- I took dance lessons. I tried to discover the sense of rhythm of the gypsies, because their sense of rhythm is effective their walking, gesture and in their speeches. On the other hand the dialect lessons began.

- You took accent and horon lessons for the movie “Yüreğine Sor”, didn’t you? Had you difficulties in this transition
- Actually, the Black Sea culture and Gypsy culture hosts confidently. For this, I was more experienced in “Gönülçelen”. I can say that this experiences supporting each other. Recently, I go to studio for the movie and after it I go to the set of “Gönülçelen”. The rhythm changed immediately. This of course influences the speech. On a day where the rhythms change, the rhythms and dialects get mixed.

- If you take a conclusion of your acting over these years, what would you say?
- Actually, I have the same feelings when I start acting, I didn’t lost it. On the one hand I say, “wow, it has been five years”. On the other hand “it has been just five years, there are still a lot of time in front of me”. I think that I acted in good series. I see that I acted with good and valuable actors and directors. It was also a great chance for me acting with experienced actors like Serif Sezer, Tuncel Kurtiz, Çetin Tekindor and Nur Sürer.

- The series “Asi” was shot in Antakya and you lived there for a while and then you were in Black Sea region because of the movie. I guess it will be an advantage for you that the shooting for “Gönülçelen” will be in Istanbul, won’t it?
- It is really difficult to take place in a series, which will be shoot out of Istanbul. I would go for a movie out of Istanbul, but I don’t know if I will do it for a series again. A series can last many years and you set a different life. Establish a new life and to get used to it is very difficult. Of course it is more attractive to shoot a series in Istanbul. My home, family, friends and my immediate acquaintance are here. After your job is done you go home.

Our Inspiration is the movie of Audrey Hepburn “My Fair Lady”
- The inspiration of “Gönülçelen” is the movie “My Fair Lady” Audrey Hepburn acted in. After this film in Turkish cinema films like “Tatlı Meleğim” and “Sürtük” were made. In the one movie Türkân Şoray and in the other one Hülya Koçyiğit acted. Now you will play a street girl becoming a lady. Did you watch these films?
- I'm a huge fan of Audrey Hepburn. I watched these film before the project was defined and I also love the old Turkish movies.

- So after Hepburn, Şoray and Koçyiğit Şoray it is after you ... You will watch yourself in such a story. How do you feel?
- I didn’t think about it. I did not know now ... In fact, I can’t look at myself like this. I'm watching myself but I am looking how I was playing. After I play the role it doesn’t get worth for me. When I watch myself I don’t think “Wow, look I’m now on TV, I’m in cinema!” I don’t have such thoughts.

- But you are perceived like a star from outside... You have many fans on a wide geographical area. What is exactly the case for you?
- A Star perception is created, but I never perceive myself like star. In fact, I also am not interested in that part of the job. I started to act, because I like to do this job. If I liked another job, I would do it. I’m acting because I love it. So it doesn’t create the perception of being a star. On my mind I don’t have the thought and because of this, I’m not acting like a star.

They requested flowers from me
- Have there been in this process of searching of Roman culture surprises for you?
- Gypsies are not too severe. For example, we live something bad during the day and this tension follows us. But they turned their backs and leave. They are clearer and have a more relaxed view of life. But obviously when I read their history I was sad, because they were always shoved. You know, they migrated from India to Europe in the Middle Ages. Of course, that period the scholastic thought dominated in Europe. In addition, there was a clear class distinction between peasants and nobles. The skin color was very important, because it represented nobility. Gypsies are dark of course, are dancing and are soothsaying. These were against the scholastic mind. Primarily they were walking around with paper in their hands. Then they were being charged with witchcraft. In Europe they didn’t get work anymore so that they should move away. They didn’t get bread and remained hungry.

- What is the current situation?
- I think that they are ignored now, too. In a sense, the gypsies are treated like stranger. For example, we were shooting in Nişantaşı were I sold flowers between the cars. Usually they don’t look at my face or snubbed me without looking in my face. This is painful.

- Are there people who recognize you, how they react?
- Funny situations are happening. Some say “oh, you, if you are shooting I will buy a flower” and some are laughing because they are surprised.
