petronela a scris:Madhubala

Mumtaz Jahan Begum Dehlavi, known by her stage name Madhubala (Devanagari) (14 February 1933 – 23 February 1969) was a Hindi movie actress. She starred in several successful movies in the 1950s and early 1960s, many of which have attained a classic status. With her contemporaries Nargis and Meena Kumari, she is widely regarded as one of the most talented Hindi movie actresses. However, it is generally accepted that Madhubala's good looks have always overshadowed her talents, and arguably, it is the striking beauty of the actress - fondly called the 'Venus of the Indian Screen' - that makes an immediate yet lasting impression on the mind of the viewer.

Personal life and controversial court case

Madhubala had a long affair with actor and frequent co-star Dilip Kumar. They first met on the sets of Jwar Bhata (1944), and worked together again in the film Har Singaar (1949) which was never completed or released. It was two years later during the filming of, Tarana (1951), that their off-screen relationship began. They also became a popular romantic screen team appearing in a total of four films together.
Madhubala was known for keeping a low profile, never making public appearances (with the exception of the premiere for the film Bahut Din Huwe in 1954) and she rarely gave interviews. Film media often speculated over her personal life and romantic liaisons and Dilip Kumar was repeatedly mentioned. These rumours were confirmed with a bold and rare public appearance during their courtship in 1955. Madhubala was escorted by Dilip Kumar for the premier of his film Insaniyat (1955), a film with which she had no other association. Though this may have been another gesture of gratitude to the producer and director S. S. Vasan, who had cared for her earlier when she had taken ill during the filming of Bahut Din Huwe (1954), this appearance was significant for another reason. By attending the premiere officially escorted by Dilip Kumar, they publicly acknowledged their relationship.
Madhubala's romance with Kumar lasted five years, between 1951 and 1956. Their association was ended following a highly controversial and widely publicized court case. B.R. Chopra, the director of the film Madhubala and Dilip Kumar were currently starring in, Naya Daur (1957), wanted the unit to travel to Bhopal for an extended outdoor shooting. Ataullah Khan objected and even claimed that the entire Bhopal schedule was a ruse to give Dilip Kumar the opportunity to romance his daughter. Finally, Chopra sued Madhubala for the cash advance she received from him for a film she now had no intention of completing. He also replaced her with South Indian actress Vyjayanthimala. Madhubala obediently supported her father despite her commitment to Dilip Kumar. Kumar testified against Madhubala and Ataullah Khan in favor of the director B.R. Chopra in open court. The case was lost by Madhubala and her father amid much negative publicity. Up until that point Madhubala had worked hard to gain a reputation as a reliable and professional performer with much good will in the industry. Her image was badly damaged after this episode. Madhubala and Dilip Kumar were effectively separated from that point on.
When rediff news spoke to her sister Madhur Bhushan, her account of the story was:
The reason Madhubala broke up with Dilip Kumar was B R Chopra's film Naya Daur, not my father. Madhubala had shot a part of the film when the makers decided to go for an outdoor shoot to Gwalior. The place was known for dacoits, so my father asked them to change the location. They disagreed because they wanted a hilly terrain. So my father asked her to quit the film. He was ready to pay the deficit. Chopra asked Dilip Kumar for help. Dilipsaab and Madhubala were engaged then. Dilipsaab tried to mediate but Madhubala refused to disobey her father. Chopra's production filed a case against her, which went on for a year. But this did not spoil their relationship. Dilipsaab told her to forget movies and get married to him. She said she would marry him, provided he apologised to her father. He refused, so Madhubala left him. That one 'sorry' could have changed her life. She loved Dilipsaab till the day she died.
She met her would-be-husband, actor and playback singer, Kishore Kumar during the filming of Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958) and Jhumroo (1961). At the time he was married to the Bengali singer and actress Ruma Guha Thakurta . After his divorce, because Kishore Kumar was Hindu and Madhubala Muslim, they had a civil wedding ceremony in 1960. His parents refused to attend. The couple also had a Hindu ceremony to please Kumar's parents, but Madhubala was never truly accepted as his wife. Within a month of her wedding she moved back to her bungalow in Bandra because of tension in the Kumar household. They remained married but under great strain for the remainder of Madhubala's life.
Probably because of her publicity-shy image and a protective lifestyle, Madhubala managed to create an aura of mysticism around her. This led to her love-life being constantly talked about and speculated on in media even today. According to rumors circulated in magazines of that era, and claims made by Mohan Deep in his book Madhubala: Mystery and Mystique (1996), she was linked with Director Kidar Sharma, Kamal Amrohi, Actor Premnath and Pakistani politician Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto at different points of her career. However, B.K. Karanjia, former Filmfare editor and a close friend of both Madhubala and her father Ataullah Khan, cleared the air, "Yes, she was aware of her beauty. And because there were so many in love with her, she used to play one against the other. But it was out of innocence rather than shrewd calculation. Madhubala was a child at heart." Besides, Mohan Deep's book has been widely trashed by renown film journalists and artistes: M.S.M. Desai, one of the privileged film journalists allowed by Ataullah Khan to visit the sets of his star daughter, contends, "Her father was very strict and since nobody, not even journalists, were allowed into her makeup room, Madhubala had few chances of flirting. Also, Mohan Deep was not around at the time of Madhubala, so how is he capable of writing about her without resorting to hearsay?"; Shammi Kapoor lashes out saying, "Mohan Deep is a swine. You can't cash in on the dead—it is in bad taste. It is a pity that while in America you could be sued for misrepresentation, in India sleaze only gives a shot to sales. That's the reason I believe one should let lying dogs lie. Madhubala, a wonderful person and a dedicated artiste, doesn't deserve this." Madhubala's father's portrayal in media as an autocrat and someone who ruined her life was refuted by Madhur Bhushan:
Being protective about and inculcating discipline in your daughter doesn't mean you are harsh and difficult. Abba (Ataullah Khan) was very orthodox. Our mother was in purdah and except for her daughters and very close relatives, no one knew what she looked like. We hate it when such nasty things are written about our father because they aren't true. Yes, he was possessive about us and wanted to protect us. ... He never allowed her (Madhubala) to work after six in the evening or attend parties because he was afraid of mishaps and my sister being led astray. (Joshi, 2008, p. 93)
B.K. Karanjia described Madhubala at home as a lively and down-to-earth person who used to wear "simple white saris, matching sandals, without a touch of make-up", and minimal or no jewelry, yet she was "quite an extraordinary beauty" who had a "peaches and cream complexion", "expressive" and "luminous" eyes and a "dazzling smile". He fondly remembered how unpretentious the star was by chronicling her playing hide-and-seek with his little daughter: "The child was still present in the woman". Karanjia also reminisced that her marriage with Kishore Kumar was "the unlikeliest of marriages, even by Bollywood standards". (Karanjia, 2006.)

Final years and death

In 1960, Madhubala sought treatment in London as her condition deteriorated. Complicated heart surgery was in its infancy and offered her some hope of a cure. After an examination the doctors there refused to operate, convinced her chances of surviving the procedure were minimal. Their advice was that she should rest and avoid overexertion, and predicted that she could live for another year. Knowing her death was imminent, Madhubala returned to India, but defied the predictions by living for another 9 years.
In 1966, with a slight improvement in her health, Madhubala tried working again opposite Raj Kapoor in the film Chalak. Film media heralded her "comeback" with much fanfare and publicity. Stills from this time showed a still beautiful but pale and wan-looking Madhubala. However, within a few days of filming, her frail health caused her to collapse and the film remained incomplete and unreleased.
When acting was clearly no longer an option, Madhubala turned her attention to film making. In 1969 she was set to make her directorial debut with a film named Farz aur Ishq. However the film was never made, as during the pre production stages, Madhubala finally succumbed to her illness and died on 23 February 1969, shortly after her 36th birthday. She was buried at Santa Cruz cemetery with her diary by her family and husband Kishore Kumar. Madhubala's tomb at the Juhu/Santa Cruz Muslim cemetery was carved in pure marble and aayats from the Quran as well as verses dedicated to her. Controversially, her tomb was demolished in 2010 to make space for new graves.

Drashti Dhami and Vivian Dsena's Madhubala- Ek Ishq Ek Junoon facing troubled waters!
1.Noutati media Madhubala_show_drashti_vivian_post_1336717257

While one is eagerly waiting for the much-hyped TV show reliving the real and reel romance between Bollywood legends Madhubala and Dilip Kumar, Colors’ Madhubala - Ek Ishq Ek Junoon seems to have sought attention for some wrong reasons.

Starring Drashti Dhami alongside Vivian Dsena, the promos of the show have already bagged in huge response from the fans. However, despite such a positive feedback, we have heard from sources that Madhubala is dealing with two major setbacks. Firstly, it has faced an objection from Madhubala's younger sister Zahida, who says that neither she nor anyone else from the late actresses' family was approached prior to the show’s making.

She is furious over the fact that the production house didn’t even bother to seek permission before taking the plans ahead. Sources say that she has sent a legal notice to the channel.

Now this objection might even sound a genuine affair but the other hurdle is simply unbelievable. As known, Madhubala was supposed to replace Veer Shivaji, which apparently called for the show’s abrupt ending. This has now enraged a political outfit Sambhaji Brigade, in Maharashtra. The organization is named after Sambhaji, son of Shivaji and the activists have threatened to disrupt the shooting of the serial and damage the sets if VS is shut down.

With all these dark clouds surrounding Madhubala, we just hope that the production house chalks out an easy escape!

Drashti Dhami says she wants to focus on her role not on chemistry with Vivian Dsena!
1.Noutati media Drashti-dhami-vivian-dsena_post_1336802536

After winning hearts playing the vivacious and bubbly Geet in Star One’s Geet Hui Sabse Parayi, Drashti Dhami is now all set to play the simple girl Madhubala in Nautanki Films’ upcoming show Madhubala-Ek Ishq Ek Junoon to be aired on Colors from May 28.

She will be seen enacting a simpleton who later climbs the ladder of success turning a big film star. The promos of the same have already become a hit amongst the fans and all are eagerly waiting for it to go air. Talking of the role and the reason behind taking it up, Drashti said, “You don’t get shows on the film fraternity on television. This is a concept which is never done before on TV, and that is the reason I took it. I did not want to do the typical saas bahu roles, and a show focusing on the harsh reality of the film fraternity is a runaway change from the usual stuff”.

Furthermore, after creating a great chemistry on-screen with co-star Gurmeet Choudhary aka Maan in Geet, Drashti will now pair up with Vivian Dsena. Speaking about her pairing with him, she said, “I really do not know why everyone speaks about the chemistry exhibited by the lead actors always. All should be concerned about the character I play, and not the chemistry I have with the lead actor. As for me, I would only want to speak about my character. The other things will be taken care of by the director and cameraman. We have not begun to shoot yet, so I cannot talk much about my role.”

Point taken Drashti and we are sure your fans will definitely lend you the same support

ID LOVE TO PLAY A VAMP

Says Drashti Dhami, small screen actress of Geet fame, who was in the city recently

Deeksha Marur

After Geet, what have you been up to

I took a sabbatical for a while now.A lot of my friends have been getting hitched so,I have been busy attending their weddings, gorging on the food and just chilling. But I want to get back to work.Right now,Im just doing one show.Serials take up all the time we have and you can do just one at a time.

Whats your character like

Its about a girl who is born and brought up in Mumbai. She ends up in a certain situation that forces her to enter Bollywood and get the stardom that she never dreamed of or even wanted.

Are there any actresses that you could relate to when playing this character

Yes,in fact I think I can relate to a lot of actresses.Because at some point of time, they too are forced to do things that they dont want to or wish to do.

What kind of roles would you want to do

I would love to play a vamp, but I think thats one role I cannot pull off.It takes a lot to do a negative role.I know the nicest people, who play the most negative characters.Like for instance,in Dil Mil Gaye, there was this character,Dr Keerthi, who I was so scared of because she came across as so evil on screen... I was under the impression she was like that off-screen too.But she turned out to be one of the nicest people Ive met.

If not Mumbai or TV,what else would you be doing

Im very happy where I am.I dont think Id want to get into films.I have been born and brought up in Mumbai,no matter how crowded it could get,how many more people settle here,or how good or bad the weather is,I dont think theres any other place Id want to be.Mumbai is home.

Is this your first visit to Hyderabad

No,actually its not.I have come here a few times before, but its been more for work.I know a few people here.Kamna Jethmalani is a goodfriend of mine.

New Delhi, May 21 She is set to portray a Bollywood diva on the small screen, but Drashti Dhami, the lead actress of forthcoming show “Madhubala… Ek Ishq, Ek Junoon”, says she has no immediate plans to enter the film industry and wants to take each day as it comes.

In the new show, to be aired on Colors, Drashti will essay the role of Madhubala, “a simple, mature and calm girl, who doesn’t wish for stardom, but it is forced on to her.”

But what is stardom for Drashti?

“What I wish for and what I have got,” the 27-year-old said confidently.

From the small screen to the big one – will the transition happen in her life soon?

“Well, I have no plans… I go with the flow. I take life day by day,” Drashti told IANS.

As of now, the actress, who is so far popular as Geet of “Geet – Hui Sabse Parayi”, is looking forward to her new show.

“It’s going to be a challenge. For two years I have been playing Geet. I have taken a break and now I am refreshed to get into a new character,” she said, dispersing all rumours that the show is based on the life of real life Bollywood stunner Madhubala.

“The show is really not about Madhubala. One has to realise that it’s not a three-hour movie. It’s a TV show, and that cannot last on just one character.”

“‘Madhubala’ is just a tribute to the film fraternity, to people from the industry – actors, junior artists, co-ordinators, the families who deal with them… it is an attempt to show how they are in real life and the emotions that they go through. It’s about what happens behind-the-scenes, not about one person,” clarified Drashti.

But personally, Drashti is a fan of late actress Madhubala, who ruled the Hindi film industry in the 1950s and 1960S with her grace and charm.

“I think she was a diva, an epitome of beauty. I don’t think I can ever be remotely compared with her. I don’t think there’s anyone as beautiful as her in the industry. If and when people see the show, they will realise, it’s not about her, so there shouldn’t be any comparisons,” she said.

“Madhubala”, the show produced by Saurabh Tewari’s Nautanki Films, features Vivian D’Sena as the male lead, a superstar named RK. The show will go on air May 28.

A red carpet premiere for TV's 'Madhubala'

Mumbai, May 22: The launch of forthcoming show "Madhubala... Ek Ishq, Ek Junoon" here was nothing less than a glamorous red carpet Bollywood premiere. And why not -- the show promises to take a behind-the-scenes look into the emotional journey of all those associated with the industry.

Held at the Cinemax, Versova, here Monday night, the launch was different from the usual announcments at hotels and banquet halls.

A red carpet was laid for the show's crew and actors, including lead stars Vivian D'Sena and Drashti Dhami.

Producer Saurabh Tewari of Nautanki Films says it was always his dream to host a premiere for his show like that of a film premiere.

The show, and its poster, spell most things Bollywood.

With lights, cameras and action, the story begins in the old town of Motihari, in the interiors of Bihar. The setting is reminiscent of the sets of Ramesh Sippy's classic "Sholay".

The scene then shifts to a pregnant lady running away to Mumbai only to find herself in the midst of a film set where she gives birth to Madhubala, the show's protagonist, essayed by Drashti.

Born literally in the lap of the film industry, Madhubala is forced to be a part of showbiz, whether she likes it or not.

Prashant Bhatt, programming head (fiction), Colors, says this is the best time to launch a show on the film industry, given the fact that Indian cinema completes 100 years next year.

"It is the story of a simple girl who is given the gift of stardom and she is not happy enjoying it. She is fulfilling dreams which she has not seen and is living a life which she didn't want, said Bhatt.

Sippy, who was present at the event too, is impressed with the look of the show.

"The show looks very dramatic and interesting and promises something very different. The story is about the film industry and of someone within the film industry. Somebody who goes there and how she got there and how her journey was," said Sippy.

"Hundred years of cinema has seen lots of changes, this will be a one beautiful change as well," he added.

The show, which goes on air May 28, also features other actors like Raj Zutshi, Sushmita Mukherjee Bundela, Shagufta Ali and lalit Parimoo.

Colors launches new primetime fiction show ‘Madhubala…Ek Ishq, Ek Junoon’

Commemorating 100 years of Indian film industry, the show premieres on May 28 and takes 8.30 pm slot from Monday to Friday

1.Noutati media Madhub11

2012 marks the onset of the 100 years of Indian cinema and to celebrate this landmark moment, COLORS is launching a first-ever magnum-opus against the backdrop of the film industry, ‘Madhubala…Ek Ishq, Ek Junoon’. Representing the Indian film industry and extending support for this first-of-its-kind venture on Indian television was industry stalwart Ramesh Sippy who shared insights on the soon disappearing fine line between films and television.

Everyday millions make their way to Mumbai – the city of dreams to struggle for a ticket to the top. While some are successful and become stalwarts in the industry, many of the others fade into obscurity. Madhubala is a love story set against the backdrop of the film industry that beautifully weaves in multiple stories of people that challenge their dreams opposed by luck.

Shot on a scale to match the grandeur of the film industry, Madhubala will provide a glimpse into the lives of the real Bollywood stars while showcasing the challenges and struggles of the people facing the arclights and fulfilling dreams while being grounded with real emotions in the back. This never-seen-before concept including an ensemble cast with actors like Raj Zutshi, Drashti Dhami, Vivian Dsena, Shagufta Ali, Sushmita Mukherji and Rakhi Vijan among others. Madhubala will premiere on May 28, 2012 and take 8.30 pm slot from Monday to Friday.

Lights… Camera… And Action… The story begins in the rustic town of Motihari in the interiors of Bihar, the story shifts focus to the bustling city of Mumbai. Bridging the gap between the simpletons and the superstars of the Indian film industry, Madhubala…Ek Ishq, Ek Junoon takes you through the tumultuous ride that connects the ordinary man to the glamour of this sapnon ki duniyaan. From being a nobody to suddenly being somebody, Madhubala, played by Drishti Dhami, sees her life undergo incessant ups and downs that creates a domino-effect taking her down a path she never chose for herself – she joins the film industry with the help of superstar RK, portrayed by Vivian Dsena and turns a star overnight. With behind-the-scenes insights from the industry, this show traces Madhu’s journey from being a simple girl next door to becoming a superstar.

Presenting Indian television’s first ever magnum opus set against the backdrop of the film industry, Prashaant Bhatt, Weekday Programming Head – COLORS said, “It is our constant attempt to bring unique and entertaining content to our audiences. Madhubala…Ek Ishq, Ek Junoon is the first-of-its-kind show on Indian television that presents an unconventional love story while revealing the different aspects that make the glitz and glam side of the film industry. The show is an archetypal movie involving high budgets and hard work that ties together the larger than life film industry with a dynamic star cast and an incredible storyline. That this idea coincides with the 100th year of the film industry creates a déjà vu feeling in our hearts making us believe that the time is right for our viewers to witness the magic of the silver screen on their television sets.”

Speaking about the production value of the show, producer Saurabh Tewari – Nautanki Films said, “Madhubala…Ek Ishq, Ek Junoon is a concept that is very close to our hearts owing to the unique storyline. Being a part of the entertainment industry, it was critical for us to recreate the magnitude of drama of the silver screen for television audiences to replicate a movie watching experience. With the current television offerings focusing on slice of life shows, Madhubala comes in as an unexplored concept – a first on Indian television. Using the canvas of the film industry, the show provides insights into the ups and downs faced by everyone involved in the making and building of a superstar. To amplify the overall experience while highlighting the larger than life film industry, we have shot scenes not only in real locations across Mumbai, but also for the first time in Indian television history ventured into Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad.”

Gracing the occasion, Ramesh Sippy – the man behind geniuses like Sholay, Shakti and Seeta Aur Geeta said, “It is great to see that with cinema completing its 100 years of existence, there are shows that are paying tribute to the film industry, and with COLORS’ bringing in a magnum opus like Madhubala which will bring in the flavour, essence, emotions and dialect of the films, one just gets closer to what goes behind in the making a film and the real heroes at the back.”

While Madhubala will pay tribute to the contribution of the film industry in our everyday lives, it will also deal with the lives of simpletons while highlighting the challenges involved in facing the arch lights and fulfilling dreams. Produced by Nautanki Films the show brings together a star-studded ensemble cast including Drashti Dhami, Vivian Dsena, Raj Zutshi, Shagufta Ali, Pallavi Chandran, Rakhi Vijan, and Sushmita Mukherji among others in pivotal roles.

Exclusive tete-a-tete with Drashti Dhami

1.Noutati media Drasht15

Drashti Dhami has beautiful and mysterious eyes which hold thousand unsaid words and emotions. This super talented actress stabbed hearts as Geet in Star One’s Geet - Hui Sabse Parayi. Her chemistry with Gurmeet Choudhary became a rage across the globe.

Now, she is coming back to enchant viewers as Madhubala in Colors’ upcoming show, Madhubala- Ek Ishq Ek Junoon which will hit the airwaves from 28 May 2012. She will pair opposite Vivian Dsena. The show is being produced by Nautanki Films.

Madhubala is a girl who is born and brought up in the city of dreams (Mumbai) amidst a filmy ambience. She is a simple girl who will gain great heights of popularity and stardom. “Madhubala is not a very ambitious girl and she does not crave for fame. She just wants to stay with her loved ones,” says Drashti to Tellychakkar.com.

She continues, “I will be seen carrying a very simple look as per the demands of the character. I will wear very less make-up. I will be seen wearing only kajal.”

So how different is Madhubala from Geet? “Very much. Madhubala is mature and calm whereas Geet was very bubbly. Moreover, as Geet I used to say oye and thoudi, so I have to get rid of the habit. I am also working on my body language.”

She is beautiful, so no doubt she might be showered with compliments. Any special incident she wants to share with us? “While I was doing Geet, the show’s cameraman said that when he looks through the lens and shut his left eye, he falls in love with the image that he sees in the viewfinder. It was indeed a great compliment.”

So is she like Madhubala in real life? “Madhubala doesn’t want to be famous but I always wanted to become an actress. No one from my family belongs to the entertainment industry. Hence, when I decided to enter the field of acting, everyone started calling me to check if I was sure about my decision. My first break was a music video where I danced on the song Saiyan Dil Mein Aana Re. Since then my family has been very supportive.”

And Drashti is not the only star in the house. Her sister-in-law, Suhasi Dhami seen in Yahaan Mein Ghar Ghar Kheli (Zee TV), is also a big name now in the world of television. “Suhasi entered a lot later. By then everyone had already gotten used to the idea of stardom. It was tough for me actually.”

Finally, what about her chemistry with Vivian? “We haven’t shot together much yet, however Vivian is a nice guy and I am sure we will hit it off well,” she ends with a beaming smile.

Ramesh Sippy: ‘Madhubala’ is a dramatic story about the film industry

The Sholay director claims that he is impressed with his first peek into Colors’ new show. But is he?

It’s strange how TV and B-town celebs say one thing when they mean something else. Not that we mere mortals don’t do so, but the style in which these guys do it continues to amaze us. We couldn’t help but roll our eyes as we listened to two bigwigs (and a few wannabe more minor wigs) praise Colors’ latest offering, Madhubala.

The title of the show has given gossipmongers a lot to buzz about, but at the launch of the show yesterday (May 21), Prashaant Bhatt, Weekday Programming Head – Colors, clarified that Madhubala has nothing to do with the real life love story between legendary actors Dilip Kumar and Madhubala. He called it “a tribute to 100 years of cinema”. “It’s about a girl who is gifted stardom, but doesn’t love it. She has to live a life she doesn’t want,” he said. Till this point we were fine, but the giggles and eye rolls started when Bhatt added, “Indian cinema’s biggest film is Sholay. The scenes shot in a rocky terrain in the first few episodes of the TV show were inspired by Sholay.” Having just watched the scene, we couldn’t help but wonder from which angle it could be any kind of tribute. One boulder, a rocky terrain does not make. And one gun and a few sidekicks are hardly as terrifying as Gabbar and Samba. Raj Zutshi’s portrayal of the evil Balraj Chaudhary is nowhere near Amjad Khan’s Gabbar Singh. Then why these unnecessary comparisons? They’ve already raised expectations by naming the show Madhubala and making us recall images of ethereal beauty – which Dhrashti Dhami just doesn’t live up to.

As we chomped on this we realised the statement was just a segue to introduce Ramesh Sippy. Have you seen any connection more long-winded and tenuous than this? You call a director just because his film, one of the greatest of Hindi cinema, inspired one tacky scene in your show? C’mon! It’s almost as if this connection was deliberately forced just so that the channel and the makers could strut around claiming that they have the support of the Sholay director. It’s a new trend that’s slowly gaining ground in telly land –having famous B-towners endorse a show. Remember Abbas-Mustan supporting Chhal – Sheh Aur Maat? Ramesh Sippy however seemed quite uncomfortable with the situation as he tried to praise a piece of work that he could easily see was tacky. He finally said:

“It’s very dramatic.” (It’s a drama so it will be dramatic. That goes without saying, right?)

“It’s a story about the film industry.” (Yes, we know.)

“Madhubala looks very interesting.” (Ahem, is there a more polite noncommittal word in B-town lexicon?)

“We are looking forward to different fare.” (Different! Of course! That answers our question.)

“In the past 100 years, cinema has seen many changes. Am sure this will be another beautiful change.” (How lovely. Your faith in the show is touching, Mr Sippy.)

After watching a 40-minute clip of the show, our sympathies were with Ramesh Sippy. We wished he had declined to associate himself with the project. We can only hope that the clip has not done justice to the show and that Madhubala is actually a product that our fave director will be proud of. Fingers crossed.

MADHUBALA Releasing Soon on Home Screens

1.Noutati media M_id_210

As a tribute to 100 years of Indian cinema, television takes a break from soap operas, and presents Madhubala, a show inspired by Bollywood

For Saurabh Tewari, the owner of Nautanki Films, Bollywood has been an inseparable part of his life since childhood. So when he planned to launch his production house, it was obvious that he wanted to do something related to Bollywood. “I wanted to make a show that was a saga and not a soap. I wanted it to be something that would have a canvas of a 70 mm while retaining the essence of the small screen,” says Tewari. It was then that he along with his team of writers, decided to put together Madhubala- Ek Ishq, Ek Junoon. “With the Indian film industry celebrating its 100 years, it was also the perfect time to pay a tribute,” he adds.

The show is as filmy as it can get. The title of the show is a give away, named after Madhubala, one of the most enigmatic actors, also remembered as the most beautiful woman of Hindi cinema. It captures the attractions, quirks, ugly side and the ways of the film industry through the story of a young actress, played by Drashti Dhami. Often called “dreamland”, every year, Bollywood sees lakhs of aspirants flocking in Mumbai with the hope of getting a break in films. Some make it, others don’t. Some are forced into it, others chance upon it, while a few others are born into it. It is this essence of Bollywood, the magic of the arclights and the medium of cinema that has been captured on this show. “At Colors, we are always looking for shows which are out of the box. This time, we were looking for something, which has never beenshown on Indian television before,” says Prashant Bhatt, fiction head, Colors.

Quick Five: Madhubala, who?

1.Noutati media 25dfr_10

Breaking away from the usual, Colors is paying tribute to 100 years of Indian Cinema with a serial called “Madhubala- Ek Ishq Ek Junoon”. Starting this Monday, it has Drashti Dhami playing the title character of Madhubala, who manages to rise from humble beginnings to become a star. As soon as the name of the show was out, many rumours cropped up around the idea that the storyline was based on the life of yesteryear star Madhubala or that it dealt with the much speculated Dilip Kumar-Madhubala affair.

“It has nothing to do with the life story of the legendary actor Madhubala, let me tell you before you ask,” says the apparently excited actor Drashti. But she admits that she is quite nervous too. Quite a popular figure in modelling and television, Drashti shot to fame with her portrayal of the character Geet in “Geet — Hui Sabse Parayi”.

Excerpts from a chat with the actor:

If not Madhubala, the actor, then what does the TV show deal with?

It is all about the real life of the reel stars and actors. It deals with their life behind the screen, their emotions and aspirations. It is not about one particular heroine.

Actor Madhubala's sister Zahida sent a notice to the show heads asking for a clarification on the serial's subject. Can you comment on such roadblocks and controversies the show has been facing since its announcement?

Any roadblock or controversy is adding to the publicity of the show. I believe that any publicity is positive publicity. People are at least getting to know that something new has been launched or something is cooking.

How do you see the transition from the very popular character of Geet to Madhubala?

I wanted to get back the freshness and all I kept doing was that. Yoga has helped a lot and to be frank, no such sort of ‘preparations' for getting into the skin of the character was done. I have been playing Geet for almost two years and yes it was quite a challenge to switch to an altogether different character. I took a break and now I am refreshed, to become Madhubala.

We already have a spate of movies like “The Dirty Picture” and “Om Shanti Om” dealing which dealt with the behind-the-scenes aspects of actors in the film industry. Is the show any different from these?

I do not think such questions even arise. This is a TV show and cannot be compared with 2-3 hour-long feature films. These are two different media and should not be compared. However, the series is indeed a tribute to the Indian film industry.

So any Bollywood plans?

I do not believe in making such plans, I just want to go with the flow. I take life day by day.

Sneak-peek into the story of Madhubala-Ek Ishq Ek Junoon!

1.Noutati media Madhubala0526_post_1338023085

Ever since the reports have come out that a show is under making based on the love story of Madhubala and Dilip Kumar and now that everything is final about it, everyone is thrilled waiting for it to hit the television screens soon.

Madhubala-Ek Ishq Ek Junoon on Colors TV is touted as one of the biggest shows even before it makes its debut on 28th May 2012. With a stellar star cast comprising of Drashti Dhami and Vivian Dsena, Madhubala-Ek Ishq Ek Junoon looks larger than life. For those curious to know what the hype and excitement is all about, here we come up with an exclusive update on the show's first episode. This episode opens with a shooting sequence where Balraj Chaudhary (Raj Zutshi) is practicing his skills on his own daughter Trishna.

Set in Motihari, Bihar, Balraj balances an apple on Trishna's head who then runs to her mother Padmini (Pallavi Purohit), who is Balraj's second wife and is seven months pregnant. Balraj's mother Ammaji (Shagufta Ali) calls up Guruji to predict her son's future. Guruji (Lalit Parimoo) tells Ammaji that if Padmini delivers a baby boy, then Balraj will flourish but if a baby girl is born, he will perish!

Ammaji then spares no efforts and calls for Badi Dai who predicts that Balraj and Padmini will have a baby boy. Both Balraj and Ammaji are very happy with the news and call for a celebration while Padmini secretly escapes from there and makes her way to Mumbai.

But why does Padmini escape to Mumbai? Is she hiding a secret?

Vivian Dsena "would not like to kiss on-screen"

1.Noutati media Vivian10

Girls would love him to suck their blood. After all, not all vampires are as smart and handsome as Vivian Dsena. Okay…we are getting a little over imaginative here. Vivian won hearts playing a vampire in Star One’s Pyaar Ki Ye Ek Kahaani. And now he is back to woo viewers as superstar RK in Nautanki Telefilms’ show Mahubala- Ek Ishq Ek Junoon to air from 28 May 2012 on Colors. The show also stars gorgeous Drashti Dhami.

Well…we got on a little naughty mode and asked Vivian if he would lip-lock on-screen, like Sakshi Tanwar and Ram Kapoor did in Bade Achhe Lagte Hain.

“I wouldn’t want to do any kissing scene on-screen as I am already half married. As everybody knows, I am engaged to Vahbbiz Dorabjee.”

So has Vahbbiz asked him not to kiss any other girl on-screen? “No, she hasn’t told me anything. It’s just that every person has his or her won limitations and so do I. And I think one must always draw the line and this is my line”, said the smart looking actor.

Drashti is a pretty looking actress so we asked Vivian if Vahbbiz is insecure about him being around her. He laughed out loud and replied, “Actually Vahbbiz and Drashti are very good friends and they knew each other even before I bagged this show. They have a common set of friends and I don’t think Vahbbiz will have issues with anybody.”

Talking about his stint in television, he shared, “I think I am just lucky in a way as there were no vampires or superstar characters on TV before when I was offered Abhay. I am widening my wings with Madhubala. And on starring opposite Drashti, I think viewers will like both of us.”

He also promised that the audience will get to see him wearing more colours this time as he plays a superstar. “I did wear a lot of black in Pyaar Ki Ye Ek Kahaani but my fans will get to see me wearing lot more colors this time. But I did wear black in promos as I’ve realized that black is my lucky colour.”

Way to go…Vivian!!!

Drashti's the new "no" girl in town
1.Noutati media Drashti%20dhami
Drashti Dhami is beautiful beyond limits. She stabbed hearts as Geet in Star One’s popular show Geet. Her chemistry with Gurmeet Choudhary was so scorching that it could ignite even plain water. But in a recent conversation with Tellychakkar.com, she appeared to be quite an unaware person. Why do we say that? Because no matter what we asked her, she had her standard reply ready, which was “no”.

We asked her how will the story of her latest show Madhubala - Ek Ishq Ek Junoon progress post its debut episode (28 May 2012), and she said, “I don’t know for I have yet to start shooting”.

Then we hurled at her, what kind of costumes will you wear in the soap?... and then ditto came the same answer.

Since she seemed so unaware about the happenings in her own show, we then decided to take a different track and asked about the chemistry between her and co-star Vivian Dsena. This question annoyed her and she replied, “Why do you only talk about our chemistry you should ask about my track.”

Okay...fair enough. So when asked to elaborate on “her track”, we thought she will give a long winding answer but all she said “As I get to play a Bollywood heroine, who did not want the arc lights, I will get to portray different emotions in this non saas bahu show.”

Dhrashti, apparently also thinks she has really arrived and thinks TV is the ultimate destination. “I don’t want to do films. It is also not because of exposure.”

And we are sure that her closing statement, “I don’t care about TRPs” may come as a real shocker for the producer of Madhubala, Saurabh Tiwari (Nautanki Telefilms).

Anyways, we just want to wish her all the very luck!!!
