The changing palate of Indian audience is gradually resulting in a change in the television industry. Indian viewers are becoming receptive to the concept of short span-serials with sequels, which earlier existed only in the West.

Interestingly, the most talked about TV shows might not necessarily be the ones with the highest rankings, rather these shows are huge on social media sites where they spur conversation and have passionate fans. These kind of shows are perfect for sequels. Since the viewers are already so invested, a sequel makes sense for everyone — the viewers, the channels and the producers.

Sequels are proving to be a hit formula in movies where one-time viewing proves sufficient but for TV, the process is extremely challenging. Viewers may watch the first couple of episodes for curiosity but will stop if there is no quality content in terms of good storytelling, strong characters, performance-oriented actors and consistency in delivering the product.

We were conscious of all this when we planned the sequel to the hugely popular Star Plus show ‘Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon?’ The original was a star-crossed love story and presented an interesting contrast of personalities with diametrically opposite ideologies. We started receiving hysteric feedback from fans when the show came to an end. The popularity of this series and the chemistry of the main leads was huge. After experiencing the huge demand and popularity of the series, the channel decided to bring back its iconic narration for the viewers. The new edition is titled ‘Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon-Ek Baar Phir’.

The second season of the show made a mark in the television industry by creating a marginal increase in the TVT numbers from 1,394 to 2,612 for the time slot 6 pm, which otherwise has been a dominant territory of repeat telecasts. Nowadays the definition of a prime time slot has changed. Earlier prime time was between 9 pm and 11 pm. Now a show gets a slot depending on competition analysis and market research.

Popular daily soaps can be revived if the makers of the show understand how to get the sequel right. Sequels could be character-driven or theme-driven but story is the most important factor. The audience expectations are also more in sequels. A second season means providing something different to the viewers and not letting it become monotonous. The story might be completely different as compared to the predecessor or it can continue to have the elements of the original story with same characters and settings, but it has to be interesting.

On TV today, there is a huge potential to create new viewing qualities. If we want new viewers, then we have to reshuffle the deck and bring new ideas and strategies to the fore, which will have a lasting influence in the industry. Crafting good sequels is a way to go about it.

Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon (4 Lions Films) was undoubtedly the most cherished shows on Star Plus, so much that the viewers still miss their Arnav and Khushi creating magic on the small screen. The first time they met, having their share of fights and falling in love made the viewers hiccup shouting out how they love watching Arshi. Both actors Sanaya Irani and Barun Sobti left no stone unturned to woo the audience. So much did they impress that they are still the most wanted pair; the viewers want to see them sizzle on screen again.

Well, that might take some time but here’s a visual treat for all their fans. Presenting the best romantic moments of Arshi.

1. When Khushi encountered Arnav for the first time

The scene sends shivers when Arnav meet Khushi for the first time. Khushi enters a venue to protest against her sister’s fiancé demanding dowry. However, she ends up on a ramp show organized by Arnav at the same venue. An embarrassed and equally shocked Khushi does not know how to walk the ramp and ends up falling in Arnav’s arms.

2. Arnav and Khushi's dance to Teri Meri (The Rabba Ve moment)

At Payal and Akash's sangeet, Payal’s (Deepali Pansare) family, the Raizadas have an upper hand and Kushi’s brilliant performance will ultimately make the Raizadas win. However, when her dance partner does not turn up, Arnav steps on stage and stuns everyone by dancing with Khushi. The song, choreography and chemistry kept viewers mesmerized!



3. Arnav kisses Khushi for the first time

During the mehendi, Anjali (Daljeet Bhanot) asks Kushi to get the shagun ke kangan from Arnav's room, Arnav tries to help her and he ends up kissing her in the debate to prove how Khushi cannot do everything what he can. This scene sets of a beautiful journey to Arshi’s love story.



4. Arnav tells Khushi “I love you damn it!”

Arnav tries convincing Khushi that they will start with the suhag raat and will follow the customs and rituals backwards. However, Khushi argues with him of how marriage is important and there is a significant reason why people take the saat pheras. An irritated Arnav takes Khushi to the terrace of his bungalow, burns a stool and proceeds with the formality of the phera’s however an Arnav’s grandmother (Swati Chitnis) witnesses all this which puts the moment to a standstill. While viewers are engrossed in the drama, we are sure the viewers are jumping with joy when Arnav finally confesses his love to Khushi saying, “I love you damn it!”



5. When Khushi says, “I love you too”

Following scene number 4, Daadiji (Swati Chitnis) creates a ruckus in the house informing the family of how Arnav and Khushi are not properly married. She even calls Buaji (Indira Gupta) to take Khushi home. Arnav comes in at the right moment and saves the day. He tells everyone that he is ready to marry Khushi all over again just so everyone is satisfied. While Khushi takes leave for her own place, she expresses her love to Arnav! That is so cute!

6. Arnav and Khushi get married

As a final stroke of separate Arnav from Khushi, there are some politics played where Daadiji (Swati Chitnis) poison’s Arnav’s mind and informs the family of how he will not marry Khushi. But Khushi’s and the viewers’ belief stands true as the wait continues in the mandap. Just when it seems like Arnav will not be present; he appears and stuns everyone when he announces that he wants to marry Khushi. Yayy!!!


7. Arnav-Khushi bed fight and romantic scene

Post marriage, Khushi tries to show Arnav her world and watches in amusement as Arnav tires to adjust to the drastic change. Finally at night, they are forced to sleep on the same bed for the first time. What results is pure Arshi comedy!



8. Khushi goes restless without Arnav by her side

Khushi makes jalebis thinking how Arnav enjoys eating it but realizes he is not there by her side. She misses him…

Our Punjabi friends not only celebrate Baisakhi as the festival of harvest but they also do so to commemorate the establishment of the Khalsa panth or Sikh order by tenth Sikh Guru, Gobind Singh.

While the Sikh community in the northern part of our country are rejoicing while celebrating the harvest by dancing, merry making, wearing festive garments and singing religious praises, a large number of devotees have also thronged the Gurudwaras across the states of Punjab, Haryana and Delhi including the Golden Temple to mark the Baisakhi festival that is celebrated with great fervor and enthusiasm all around.

In our zest to know if this festival is celebrated in Mumbai with equal zeal, we spoke to a few Punjabi television actors, who have established themselves in the GEC space, on their plans of celebrating the auspicious festival today.

Daljeet Bhanot: Well, I am not celebrating Baisakhi in traditional manner but I made sure to make my day special by having something sweet. So I had some yummy mangoes while my parents went to the Gurudwara to seek blessings for all of us (laughs).

Akshay Dogra: I have never seen anyone celebrating Baisakhi in this city. Baisakhi is very special to me as it marks the 2nd marriage anniversary of me and my wife Sakshi (Dogra). Here I would like to wish a very happy Baisakhi for whoever this day holds special significance.

Actor Barun Sobti (right) might have become a big name now, but the Delhi boy is still the humble rooted man that he was five years back. So, in spite of his hectic shooting schedule in Bhopal for his upcoming Bollywood outing, Satra Ko Shaadi Hai, the actor recently made it a point to attend his niece’s birthday, back home in the Capital at Kirti Nagar.

“I took a two-day off and came to Delhi for my niece’s birthday... she is very dear to me,” says the 29-year-old, who became a rage after appearing in the tele drama, Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon. “It was a packed schedule, so I couldn’t hang out much. But yes, I managed to have my fill of choley bhature. In fact, the moment I landed at the airport, my mom ordered it for me, so that I could eat it the moment I reach home,” says Sobti, who’s quite a foodie and a fan of eateries at Khan Market.

Fight for “Rabba Ve”

There is a new storm in the life of fans connected to the most popular show with Barun Sobti and Sanaya Irani as leads in Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon? When the second season commenced with the same name suffixing “Ek Baar Phir” loyal fans didn’t take it on a brighter side. There were hate mails and Facebook and Twitter was flooded with negative comments for Star Plus, as well as Avinash Sachdev and Shrenu Parikh who are playing the protogonists in season 2. Ignoring the fans’ rage, the show continued with the new cast and crew at a new time slot.

The hardcore fans of the original jodi , who proudly call themselves as “Arshi” or “Sarun” fans were punched again yesterday when the new promo of “Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon – Ek Baar Phir” was aired. The soundtrack of “Rabba Ve” which was widely accepted as an anthem for Arshi/Sarun fans is being used on “Avinash – Shrenu” aka “Shlok – Astha” jodi. The fans of first season are not taking this new promo in good stride and once again are showing their fury via hate mail and comments on social networking sites. Loyal fans of “Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon?” bond to this track only with their Arshi (read Arnav and Khushi) or Sarun (read Sanaya Irani and Barun Sobti) and refuse to accept it with any other jodi. “Rabba Ve” with any other jodi is one of the biggest nightmares of dedicated fans turning into reality. Call it an emotional bonding or delusion but fact is “Rabba Ve” is a song which is considered as rights of “Arshi” ONLY.

This time he is not returning on small screen in fact he will be romancing the big screen!

Barun's debut movie is titled Main Aur Mr Right, and he recently tweeted few exclusive pictures from the movie and some funny moments off screen with his co star Shenaz Treasurywala.

The film went on floors on 10 May 2012 and is still in post production stage.
Producers are trying to release it soon, may be in coming months Barun's fans will again see him acting.

The actor has a massive fan following and when he decided to quit his daily soap to venture his dream to act in movies, his followers sent thousands of hate mails to film's director and producer.
