Q: What did you feel when coming to Istanbul after 30 years?

C: The first two months I spent in a hotel room in Ayvalik. We were shooting Kirik Kantlar at that time. Then Hatirla Sevgili started and now Gonulcelen. Now I see that it makes no difference being here or there. You can go and come. I’m here today, and can be in New Zealand tomorrow. I have got such a freedom.

Q: What do you miss much in Paris?

C: I lived there for 30 years. So I miss simple things of daily life. For instance the smell of the subway… Having a coffee in a café, eating croissant… They usually hold home parties in Paris, I miss joining those parties. You get to know strangers. I miss going to a nice restaurant in the evening and drinking wine. I love walking around Paris very much. And I’m alone most of the time. I enjoy strolling about the city. I can see an exhibition suddenly and go in, or I can do shopping, eat sweets, but the most beautiful is meeting my friends and chatting with them.

Q: Where do you meet mostly?

C: All the parts of Paris are beautiful, but I like the Tenth Part more these days. There is a television channel there. And new cafes are being opened around. People sit there and have drink. I’ve got a friend who is an actor. We go there together with him, have pizza and drink rosé. Beyoglu is almost the same. You can sit in a restaurant and chat till 3 o’clock in the morning. Both chatting and sharing are wonderful. I also love eating very much, and I like to live enjoying it together with those who love it as much as me, because meal is the most beautiful sharing. That is why I love Istanbul so much, because all are talking about meals here. In the afternoon they talk about what they will have for supper, and in the evening they talk about where they are going to have breakfast.

Q: So, do you cook?

C: Yes… My friends come to me, and I cook some practical meals of what I have in the fridge. I used to live together with a friend of mine in France. And I used to be engaged in cooking and I did like it. I used to cook meals of the French kitchen mostly.

Q: What else do you do for taking a breath, besides meeting and spending time with your friends?

C: I play football. We have got a football team named Ayazma, famous people such as Harun Tekin, Hayko Cepkin, Can Oz, Hakan Yel and Dogu Yucel enter the team. Sometimes we have matches. The latest was the match with the 15 years old Young Ladies National Team before the Youth Olympic Games held in Singapore. It was amusing. Sport is wonderful, it contributes to people to come together and to share with each other.

Q: What parts of Istanbul do you enjoy most of all?

C: I like Balat. I have discovered it due to Gonulcelen. It is old Istanbul; its streets, historical buildings, old Turkish baths, mosques, churches are very beautiful. And I love the people there. Istanbul changes immediately from one street to another. I like Teshfikiye and Tarlabashi, too. Of course I won’t skip old Istanbul, Sultanahmet, Beyoglu and Tunel.

Q: You came back after 30 years when lots of people desire to live abroad…

C: There is great potential in Turkey. Such series are not shot in any other place in the world. It is never seen before – to shoot a scene on Tuesday and to watch it on TV on Wednesday together with 20 million people. You shoot a 100 minutes film within five days. It is very serious issue. I think Michael Moore should make a documentary film on this issue. You have to find it funny. I have got great passion. I love this profession. Unfortunately, television is a sector easily depleted, but you must make the scene to be felt and enjoyed, for you are watched. You must give its due fully. You need to do it if you want to have quiet sleep in the evening.

Q: Why do you think is Gonulcelen being loved so much?

C: The subject is two different worlds – a gypsy neighborhood and a mansion. And these two lives are displayed in parallel. It touches every feeling. And I think that is the very popularity – catching the people of each sector and each age.

Q: What is going on there in your dream world?

C: I’m a utopian person. When you become mature, make steps towards wisdom and begin recognizing how the world revolves around us, you start withdrawing naivety and utopianism, and take up with some obligations. I don’t want to lose that utopianism. That is why I continue dreaming. These are simple but important facts. And there are personal feelings, too, including love.

Q: You are very sensitive though you seem inscrutable. Does this sensibility bear hard on you sometimes?

C: Yes, sometimes I find it unbearable. I can’t tolerate injustice. I believe in people much, but when a person before me has no life philosophy, and lets himself get carried away by some ordinary and low-priced things, I go mad. And I don’t even deal with him, just give up. You can’t go somewhere with him, or dream about something, or do something else. This person may be not only my beloved one, but also the one whom I work with.

Q: Are you able to give up so easily if the matter is love?

C: It’s beyond your power. If it is something recoverable you will say that. You have to accept everyone’s character. No one is obliged to eat or to drink what you are eating and drinking. There is no accounting for tastes. And all these are linked to your life philosophy. When saying “give up”, it’s not me who gives up. It takes its source in circumstances, not in me.

Q: You have played a small part as a guest actor in a film recently. What was that, and how did you feel?

C: Yes, I played a part in Omer Faruk Sorak’s film “Love loves coincidences” (Ask tesadufleri sever). The film is about the love arising from coincidences. I have talked about missing the target of love in “Madonna in Sheepskin Coat”. Here we have some people missing one another, too, but then they meet somewhere and great love comes up. Belcim Erdogan plays an actress. She speaks to a French director for a French film during the interview she joins. I’m the director. A very short scene, but I wanted to be in the film as a guest actor and felt happy. The film set used to have great energy and the most wonderful thing was that we played in French.

Q: Do you believe in such coincidences?

C: I believe in electrics and coincidences, but however there are too many coincidences and that is why there is no coincidence in fact. All are connected to each other. I try to create opportunities myself. And we are the ones who direct the destiny.

Buna ziua fetelor si bine v-am gasit,multumesc frumos Narcisa pentru tradus sa ai parte numai de bine. A-ti dezbatut nu gluma povestea noastra sa vedem cine a ghicit sau a fost pe aproarpe de cum va decurge relati celor doi.Fiind cu pianul sud fereastra lui hoca,Hasret ar trebui sa-i faca niste serenade poate asa sa-i treaca betiesigul[draci] ,las ca vine bunica cu descintece ,farmece si-l imblinjesc pe Murat de nu stie ce l-a lovit.Acum, pe serios ori ce ar face Hasret binenu iese; daca va lua lectii cu alt prof. v-a fi bai ,daca v-a vinde iar flori atunci ii va confirma spusele lui hoca ca n-a evaluat de loc , numai sa nu faca un gest necugetat de care se temea si Gulnaz.
